Cutting
the Gusset Plates
Clamp one
end of the 36" x 3" x 1/16" piece of Balsa and use the combination
square to draw a line down the middle. Then trace the line with
an Xacto knife until you have cut all the way through.
Cutting
the Vertical Hips
You will
wind up cutting the same pieces over and over again. In order to
make sure the pieces are cut identically, it is helpful to have a
template. You can make a simple "Vertical Hip" template by
sawing off a 6 1/2" piece of wood from one of your 1/2" x 1/2" x 36"
pieces of balsa wood. Use this template to create 4 "Vertical
Hips".
Creating an End Post Template
You can
create an "End Post" template in three steps. First, place the
1/2" x 1/2" x 36" piece of wood over your design drawing. Then
mark where the wood meets the top of the bottom chord and both the
bottom and the top of the top chord. Second, place the piece in
the miter box and saw along the outermost lines. You will have
to use the 45 degree slot to do the cutting, even though the angle
will not be 45 degrees.
Finally, cut a 1/4" notch in the
"End Post". This notch will let the "End Post" wrap around the top
chord. It is easier to cut the slot if you put scrap wood pieces
in the miter box to make sure you do not cut too deeply. Be sure
to save the "diamond" piece you cut out of the end of the template.
It is used as a template too!
Cutting
the End Posts
Use your big
template to cut out 4 end posts. Use the small diamond piece to
measure where to cut the notch.
