Woodworking Basics

Cutting Tools

Xacto™ Knife

Here is our first cutting tool.  It is called an Xacto™ knife, and holds a razor blade.  We’re going to use it twice during construction.  Once when we cut down the gusset plate and once to cut out chunks of glue that add weight.

Miter Box and Miter Saw

Next, I’m going to show you a special saw.  This saw fits in a “miter box.”  A miter box has two very interesting features: One is a lip on the bottom of the box that lets you hold the box steady against the work surface.  Second, the box has slots cut in it that lets you cut pieces of wood perfectly straight or at a 45 degree angle.

Hand Saws

The final cutting tool I’m going to show you is also a saw.  It is smaller than a miter box saw, so it is easier to handle.  But it is so small that it cannot cut all the way through wood that is placed in the miter box.  We use these saws to cut off pieces of wood that are already glued to the bridge and don’t fit in the miter box.

Once stuff is cut, it has to be glued back together.  We'll talk about those tools next.
