How Bridges Work

Arch Bridges

An arch bridge works by taking the load placed on it and pushing it out to the edge of a valley.  This “pushing” action is called compression.  In the picture below, the bridge is supporting the load of two bunnies, pushing against two books.

Unfortunately if there are no ends to push against, the bridge will fall.  In the picture below, if one of the books is removed, the bridge collapses.
